A second protester died on February 23, 2011, from an attack by provocateurs on anti-government demonstrators at Sanaa University the night before, Human Rights Watch said today. Another protester died shortly after the Sanaa attack.
For the first time, the European Union (EU) has called upon Israel to protect the rights of Arab citizens of Israel. Specifically, the EU urged Israel to increase efforts to address the economic and social situation of the Arab minority, to enhance their integration in Israeli society, and protect their rights.
Triggered by the Tunisian revolution, then given impetus by that of Egypt, the wave of protests spreading throughout the Middle East and the Maghreb is growing by the day. The response to it has become increasingly violent, culminating in recent days with the atrocious massacres committed in Libya by the brutal dictatorship of Colonel Gaddafi, regarding which the ITUC has just launched an urgent appeal.
The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its Libyan member organization, the Libyan League for Human Rights (LLHR), urge the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) to immediately seize the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights and the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) on the serious human rights violations that are being perpetrated in Libya by the Libyan authorities and officers under their control.
