SPECIAL FOLDER "Social Movements in the Arab Region" PART 1

The extraordinary victory of the Egyptian people against Mubarak follows in the steps of the Tunisian revolution that cut down the Ben Ali regime. In the few days following the success of the Egyptian people, the influence of these popular and astonishing victories extended to the entire Arab region and beyond that, inspiring and encouraging similar protests and social movements throughout the Arab world.

Demonstrations, strikes, assemblies, self-defense committees, mobilizations of trade unions, high-school pupils, democratic associations and others have all stepped forward to fight against oppression and social in-equalities. In many countries these protests have clashed with absolute determination against state apparatuses, most particularly the police.
