One year passed on judging Kareem Amer

"Kareem Amer starts today his second year in Burg Al-Arab prison on the four-year imprisonment sentence issued against him by Moharram Beik Court of Misdemeanor, (Alexandria) on February 22, 2007, directly after being arrested on November 6, 2006 on charges of despising religions and insulting the President ", the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information and Hisham Mubarak Law Center said today.

Kareem Amer whose imprisonment was supported by the Court of Appeal on March 12, 2007, is now waiting for decision regarding appealed cassation submitted by his lawyers in the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information and Hisham Mubarak Law Center through which Amer and his lawyers hope to find justice. They also hope that his case be dealt with law, not according to religious thoughts or personal beliefs.

"Kareem Amer faced severe injustice and many violations besides being imprisoned. He became more than just a prisoner of conscious, that even some commercialized his name by collecting donations for him without his consent or permission, then being defamed by some hard-liners and those looking for the fame. Lately, he was deprived of having investigation in his torture accident occurred in Borg Al-Arab prison despite of the official notice submitted to the General Prosecutor for about 4 months ago", the two human rights organizations advocating Amer said.

Gamal Eid the executive director of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information stated "Despite of unspeakable unjust that Kareem Amer suffered and suffering from, he is still consistent and strong cause he feels the fairness of his situation and the solidarity of many people and human rights organizations all over the world. Every time we come to visit this young blogger, we find a smile mixed with a tenacious look that proves he deserves the support".

It is worthy to mention that Kareem Amer has been awarded the internet prize by Reporters without Borders for the year 2007 that it was received on his behalf by Rawda Ahmed Sayed, the lawyer in the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information.
