SOCIAL MOVEMENTS ASSEMBLY SEMINAR

INVITATION

DAKAR, SENEGAL

NOVEMBER
5-7, 2010

In the run up to the World Social Forum of 2011 in Dakar and following the proposal of the Social Movement’s Assembly Seminar held in Sao Paulo 21-23 January 2010 that a similar seminar take place in Dakar, a meeting was organised on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 in the Amadou Gaye Sociocultural Centre in Dakar.
(See attendance list below)

The aim of this meeting was to collect the opinions of the Senegalese Social Movements concerning the decision taken in Sao Paulo in January.  The proposal was to organise a similar Seminar in Dakar with a bigger presence of the Africa Social Movements. This Seminar would help with the mobilisation of the Social Movements for the 2011 WSF and to prepare the process of the Assembly of the Social Movements during the WSF 2011.

Initially, this Assembly is the place where a common agenda of actions and mobilisations is set. We hope to have a large and successful General Assembly of the Social Movements during Dakar’s WSF, to strengthen the struggles for alternatives and to improve the connections between all the Social Movements, particularly in Africa.

The Senegalese organizations attending the meeting of May 29th, 2010, were pleased with the initiative and decided by mutual agreement to organise this Seminar from November 5th to 7th in Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD II) in Dakar.  Although the attendance of the African Social Movements is the priority invitation would also be extended to other movements to participate.

This November date was chosen to fit in with the numerous mobilisations organised for 2010, including the World March of Women’s 3rd Global Action taking place in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, October 14th to 17th, and the World Forum on Education, to be held in Palestine at the end of October. There are also discussions on the possibility of having the International Council of the World Social Forum meeting in Dakar in November 2010.

A National Organising Committee, with members of the World March of Women,  Via Campesina and CADTM, will mainly help with the logistical aspects, with the support of different international networks and social movements in Senegal. Other Senegalese organisations will join the Committee.

A call was submitted to the international networks and organisations involved in the Assembly of the Social Movements process to mobilise material, technical and financial support, to make sure this first Seminar in Africa is a great success.
